Berlin Brandenburg International Airport
Berlin | Germany

About Venue
The idea behind expanding the Schoenefeld airport into the new Capital Airport Berlin Brandenburg International (BBI) is to unify all air-traffic in the Berlin-Brandenburg region and reduce the congestion in Berlin by closing the Tempelhof Airport and the Tegel Airport. The plan is already under way with the closure of the Tempelhof Airport in 2008. Similarly, the closure of the Tegel Airport in 2012 will signal the completion of the expansion. The new BBI airport, will greatly free Berlin from traffic congestion. The BBI will also provide excellent inter connectivity by road and by trains. The much touted 20-km airport shuttle track is expected to take just 20 minutes to reach the city centre of Berlin.

Exhibition Centre Information

Location: The new BBI, which is actually the Schoenefeld airport, is situated southeast of Berlin in Brandenburg. You can get to BBI from Hauptbahnhof by the Airport Express in 28 minutes. Similarly, a RE7 and RB17 train runs every 30 minutes to the airport. You can also reach BBI by car by taking the A100 or the A113.

Facilities
BBI is expected to receive 27 million visitors when it opens in the year 2012 and is projected to handle up to 40 to 45 million passengers. The baggage-sorting hall is expected to have a gross floor space of 20,000 sqm with the baggage conveying equipment taking up 9500 sq.m. There will be 16 jet ways and two walk boarding piers in the main piers. The six-track railway station will measure a total of 405 metres in length and 60 metres in width. It has two platforms for regional and inter-city trains as well as a platform for S-Bahn trains. BBI will have 2,058 rooms with 33,000 sqm of glass facades. The heat recovery system is an innovative one and is expected to maintain or recover 80% of all the heat expended within its walls.

Nearby Tourist Attraction
The Berlin Cathedral or the Berliner Dom is the largest church in Berlin. The 3-part organisation of the building along with the elements of the baroque palace architecture makes it a cathedral. Known for its magnificent interiors, tourists who climb up to the Cupola are rewarded with fantastic panoramic view of Berlin. Originally completed in 1663 the Kronprinzenpalais, or Crown Prince’s Palace, hosts some of Germany’s most important and sometimes controversial exhibitions. However, it has reserved a place in German history, by hosting the signing of the German unification agreement on 31st August 1990. The Neue Synagoge (New Synagogue) along with the Jewish Museum and the Holocaust memorial reflects a thriving Jewish community that was part of Berlin. Built in 1866 to seat 3200 people, the building houses the Centrum Judaicum foundation today. Now more of a museum, the New Synagogue exhibits Torahs and scrolls which were excavated as late as 1989 during the restoration phase.
